Candy Floriculture

Growing your own Herb Garden

There is something really satisfying about growing your own herbs.  A quick snip of lovingly grown basil, chives, mint or coriander into an equally lovingly prepared dish adds a level of completeness you just can't achieve from a jar of dried stuff you bought in the supermarket.

Growing herbs is relatively easy, and the results are fantastic. Who can resist a sprig of fresh basil atop a home-made spaghetti bolognaise?

Or fresh coriander chopped into salds, soups and maybe curries?
Candy Floriculture recommends Chive mash and minty peas among our favorites, made all the more special if you grow the potatoes and peas as well.
No kitchen is too small to accommodate a pot or two of fresh herbs; even a windowsill has room for a little basil and coriander.

A porch, yard or garden can afford a tub of mint, chives, sage, rosemary and even oregano which will last for years and become as much a staple to the kitchen as a herb rack (and of course smell much more appetizing).

While pots of basil, coriander and parsley can be bought from the supermarket for around $5.00, they're not all they're cracked up to be. Fresh herbs from the supermarket are grown in intensive, hot-house conditions, and can be fed with a host of unsavory pesticides and fertilizers. Because they're put under so much pressure to produce lots of lush leaves, their root-balls don't develop properly, so they're most likely to die as soon as you've got them home.

Therefore Candy Floriculture recommends buying herb plants from a reputable garden center, or grow the plants from seeds.

Of course, it's not just regular dishes that benefit from home-grown herbs. Ever tried lavender biscuits? Or making your own horseradish sauce or mustard? Now there's a challenge...

Candy Floriculture Restaurant Flowers

Candy Floriculture - Ideas for your Restaurant Table Top Display

Candy Floriculture ideas for flowers in your restaurant

The buzz of customers and diners trickle into your restaurant, they will take a moment to look around and absorb their surroundings, especially while they wait to be seated. If you decorate the place right, your customers will feel the ambiance created by the elegant and stylish elements of your décor. The need for first presentation usually is most essential for any restaurant or fine diners.

Candy Floriculture promotes fresh flowers that complement your restaurant’s interior its colour scheme will help produce a warm, welcoming, and hospitable environment. Raise your diners’ spirits and make them feel welcome by placing a small, artistically-made arrangement of fresh flowers on each table. It doesn’t cost must to make an impression!   Flower arrangements for a restaurant centrepiece can range from modest to lavish. When considering flower arrangements for each table, keep in mind that the flowers are there to add charm to your restaurant, not serve as a distraction.

Candy Floriculture recommends that you select flowers that will live five to seven days when watered regularly, like hydrangeas and chrysanthemums. While other short-living flowers might look pretty, replacing them every two or three days will get too costly. Get the ones that have lots small buds as these can live for up to two weeks, and remember to
remove the wilting flowers as the buds start to blossom.  It is essential to add water to the vase every day to ensure a fresh supply of nutrients. When your restaurant closes, keep the flower arrangements in the fridge; they should be able to fit in there if they are small, shallow arrangements. To make the flowers last even longer, get a flower preservative from your florist or place two drops of bleach into the water to preserve the petals and to prevent bacteria growth.

Candy Floriculture recommends you to choose a petite arrangement placed in a shallow bowl. Never get large floral centrepieces that obstruct the view from across the table, as this will make it difficult for your diners to talk to each other. Therefore the centrepiece should never be the centre of the table’s conversation.  Whatever flower arrangement you’ve chosen, you can always add tea lights to it making it appear more colourful, interesting, and sweet-smelling. Citrus fruits in particular go great with the scent of some roses.

Candy Floriculture - How to Grow Your Very Own Herbs

How to Grow Your Very Own Herbs

Candy Floriculture - Customize your very own Herb Garden

Herb

Special Care

How to Harvest

How to Use

Basil
Candy Floriculture recommends pinching off any flowers that appear.
This preserves the plant’s flavor, and will also help increase the leaf density of each stem.
Candy Floriculture suggest to harvest the upper leaves first, taking just a few leaves from each stem at a time.Add raw to salads, sandwiches and wraps, cook into soups and sauces, chop and sprinkle on pizza, make pesto.

Parsley
Parsley has a longer than average germination period of three to four weeks, so extra patience is required.Experts at Candy Floriculture suggest cutting  the outermost stalks just above ground level, which will encourage further growth. Both the leaves and stalks can be eaten in salads, soups, and Mediterranean dishes like Tabouli.

Chives
Candy Floriculture suggest you to pinch flowers off as soon as they begin to appear.Cut the leaves with scissors, starting with the outside leaves first, allowing about 2 inches of the leaves to remain. This entire plant can be eaten from top to bottom— the bulbs taste like mild onions, the leaves can be used in salads and other dishes, and even the flower heads can be tossed into salads.

Cilantro
Cilantro does not like hot weather. If the soil temperature reaches 75 degrees, the plant will bolt and go to seed, making this a short-lived herb. Aggressive pruning will extend its life, so be ready to use or store it. Save the seeds to use in cooking (the seeds are called coriander) or to plant. There are two methods of harvesting cilantro. When the plant reaches about 6" in height, you can remove the outer leaves with a scissors, leaving the growing point intact for new growth. Or you can wait until the plant is almost completely grown and pull it from the soil by its roots to use the whole bunch at once.Salads, wraps, dips, and many Mexican recipes.

Rosemary
This plant can be difficult to start from seed, so you may wish to buy a mature plant. Candy Floriculture suggest not to overwater—rosemary likes its soil on the dry side.Simply cut off pieces of the stem as you need it.Many culinary and even medicinal uses.

Thyme
This plant can take awhile to start from seed, so you may wish to buy a mature plant. Drought-tolerant thyme is extremely easy to care for, and prefers drier soils.Simply cut off pieces of the stem as you need it.Often used to flavor meats, soups, and stews.

Dill
Drought-tolerant dill is extremely easy to care for, and prefers drier soils.Candy Floriculture suggest not to start harvesting dill until it's at least 12 inches tall, and never take more than one-third of the leaves at any one time.Great flavoring for fish, lamb, potatoes, and peas.

Mint
Mint is an invasive plant so stick to container gardening with this one.Pinch off sprigs as you need them.Mint is extremely versatile, and can be used in salads, desserts, drinks, and many other recipes. You can even chew it by itself for a pleasant, refreshing flavor

Eco Pochi @ Candy Floriculture Singapore

Room Deodorant Plant “Eco-pochi”

Selected Eco-Pochi available @ Candy Floriculture Singapore

What is Eco-Pochi?

Candy Floriculture Eco-pochi is an interior plant which removes room odors. Eco-pochi consists of two parts: an interior plant and a deodorant base plant. The plant is placed in a pot like base made of deodorant material.

Why Eco-pochi is eco-friendly?

Eco-pochi’s deodorant part is made of natural material. There are two kinds of deodorant bases.  They are a “Black” base and “White” base. The “Black” is made of bamboo charcoal. Bamboo charcoal is a traditional Japanese deodorant material.

In Japanese homes, bamboo charcoal is usually placed in the lavatory; shoe box; the refrigerator. The “White” is made of volcanic ash. Volcanic ash is also used as a deodorant material in Japanese homes. Volcanic ash is often used for walls, to help purify the air of the house. Both bamboo charcoal and volcanic ash are considered eco-friendly natural deodorant materials in Japan.

How Eco-Pochi works?

You can water Eco-pochi like normal interior plants. The water activates the bacteria in the base of Eco-pochi. The bacteria then helps remove room odors even more. Eco-pochi naturally fits into your fine interior décor.
Eco-pochi doesn’t contain soil, so you won’t mess up your room by spilling any real soil. Unlike other artificially made room deodorizers in plastic containers, Eco-pochi fits right in with your room interior.

There are 4 different styles of Eco-pochi

You can choose your favorite Eco-pochi among 4 different styles.

Where is Eco-pochi made?

Eco-pochi is made in Amakusa, Japan, which is a beautiful island abundant with nature.
